Green Hospitality Members aim to reduce carbon emissions by reducing energy consumption, preserve scarce water resources and minimize waste production. Members are encouraged to protect and promote local biodiversity, buy locally where possible and encourage visitors to use local “green” businesses and services.  Visitors are encouraged to adopt a responsible approach to the environment without reducing the quality or enjoyment of their visit.

Dedicated Green Team

The Connacht Hotel have made significant strides since the Green team was formed in November 2018 to access how the Hotel can operate in a more sustainable way. The Committee is made up of a representative of each department who represent their colleagues, helping to ensure that every department is following through initiatives mapped out to achieve real change.

Results to date

The results so far have been fantastic with general waste down 40% between 2018 and 2019. Recycling has seen an increase of 34% over the same time period and glass recycling up a staggering 41%. Other initiatives such as a “carbon neutral day” was initiated in November 2019, where on the day staff took public transport or carpooled to work, eliminated all unnecessary printing and the team were served meat free meals in the staff restaurant. This served to inform and form new habits and enough carbon was saved on the day to service a return flight for 1 person from Dublin to New York has also contributed to the work being done in the hotel.

On foot of all of these initiatives and much more work being done by the team in the Connacht Hotel. The Hotel has been awarded the Green Hospitality.ie Silver award for introducing an  Environmental Action Plan focusing on Energy, Waste & Water Management.

The GreenHospitality.ie Programme is a voluntary programme that aims to develop leadership and best practice within the hospitality sector.
