Things to do this St. Patrick's day in Galway

Watch the parade

Every year on March 17th, Galway really comes to life for St. Patrick’s Day. The parade winds through the city centre, with music, dancers, colourful floats, and local groups filling the streets. It’s friendly, creative, and full of character. More than just a parade, it sets the tone for a city-wide celebration of Irish culture, community and fun. There’s more information on this below.

Eyre Square Festival Village

Eyre Square will be the heart of the festival. There will be three days of free outdoor concerts with Saturday night highlighting indie music, Sunday night focusing on family friendly entertainment with circus performances and young bands, while Monday looks at traditional Irish music and upbeat performances. There will be a vibrant atmosphere throughout Galway that'll spread from Eyre Square.

Irish music and dancing in pubs

Enjoying food, drink and Galway hospitality is the perfect way to soak up the Irish vibe before and after the parade. The city comes alive with music, colour and craic as the streets fill with people of all ages enjoying the atmosphere. Step into any pub and you’ll find lively trad sessions, a bit of céilí dancing, and plenty of chat.

Family Friendly Activities

For families visiting Galway over St. Patrick’s Day, there’s plenty of fun beyond the parade. One of the highlights is the Family Fun Day held around Salthill and Leisureland, offering a great mix of games, outdoor challenges, and activities designed especially for kids. In past years, Salthill Park has hosted obstacle-style games, sports, and group activities that are perfect for children of all ages, ideal for burning off some post-parade energy! The Connacht Hotel, with its family suites and dedicated kids’ facilities, is a great base for making the most of both the city celebrations and the fun out by the coast.

Sporting events

For something a little different from the parade crowds, the Tribesmen Head of the River is a thrilling event to catch. Taking place on 15th March, it’s a rowing spectacle where crews race along the River Corrib, drawing spectators young and old to the banks for a lively and scenic day out. It’s a fantastic way to experience another side of Galway’s vibrant community spirit, and a great opportunity for families to enjoy the outdoors before the main St. Patrick’s Day festivities kick off.
