FREE TALK & TRAIL EVENTS AT GALWAY CITY MUSEUM FOR HERITAGE WEEKFor National Heritage Week 2022, Galway City Museum will be running five FREE Talk and Trail events about the Corrib waterways. The talks will take place at Galway City Museum, Spanish Parade every day from Tuesday 16th August through to Saturday 20th August from 12pm to 1pm. Afterwards, participants will be given a 4.5km Walking Trail, developed by Galway City Museum, to encourage further exploration beyond the museum walls of the city banks of the river Corrib. Attendees will learn about the local history, legends and folktales associated with the Corrib (lake and river) and with Galway Bay, into which it drains. These events are suitable for ages 10+. Booking is essential, please contact the museum on 091532460 or by email, museum@galwaycity.ie to secure your place.

Lough Corrib is the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland. It separates the fertile limestone plains of east Galway from the lake-strewn bogs and rugged mountains of Connemara in the west. The lake is connected to Galway Bay by a short, yet powerful, body of water today known as the River Corrib. The sound of the river as it rushes towards the sea is, and always has been, the soundtrack to life in Galway.

Since the first humans arrived on the island of Ireland, its seas, rivers and lakes provided a means of transport and an important source of food and water. The rich finds from the Corrib – from prehistoric log boats to Viking-style axes – confirm that from the Late Stone Age onward this river and lake were vital waterways for proto-Galwegians. Waterways have also long been a source of mystery, devotion and inspiration for those drawn to water. Many wells, streams, rivers, lakes and seas have become associated with water deities, mythical creatures and supernatural occurrences.

Galway City Museum want to make more people aware of the value of the Corrib environmentally and historically but also as a fascinating source of folklore that has influenced Galway communities for generations. Join them during Heritage Week and help keep the lore alive!

Coming soon… An online exhibition on 'Local History, Legends and Folktales of the Corrib' will feature later in the year on the new Galway City Museum website thanks to funding from Galway City Council and The Heritage Council. This will make the content available to an even wider community both for learning and enjoyment! For more on upcoming exhibitions or to sign up to the museum newsletter visit www.galwaycitymuseum.ie
